In 2026, search has changed. And most small business websites haven't caught up. In May 2026, Google announced what it described as the biggest change to search in over 25 years. Instead of returning a list of links, search will increasingly drop users into AI-powered interactive experiences, dispatch information agents to gather data on their behalf, and generate custom interfaces on the fly in response to their questions. Google's AI Overviews are already used by more than 2.5 billion monthly users; its conversational search mode tops 1 billion. The ten blue links—the format that defined how people found information online for two decades—are no longer the destination.

The people who might hire you, buy from you, or recommend you are increasingly getting their answers synthesised and delivered directly—via ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google's own AI interfaces—with a citation attached, or with no outbound link at all.

If your website isn't structured to be that citation, it doesn't matter how good your offering is. You simply don't appear.

What AEO actually means

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. Where SEO is the practice of optimising a website to rank in Google's search results, AEO is the practice of optimising a website to be cited by AI-powered answer engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google's AI Overviews, and the growing category of AI assistants that deliver synthesised answers rather than a list of links.

The distinction matters because the two disciplines have meaningfully different technical requirements. Getting a page to rank in a traditional search result requires signals like backlinks, keyword relevance, and page authority. Getting a page cited by an AI engine requires something different: clear entity signals, structured data, answer-first content formatting, clean crawlability, and a website infrastructure that AI crawlers can actually read.

Many sites that rank well on Google are largely invisible to AI engines—and their owners don't even know it yet. This is because the infrastructure underneath the content hasn't been built for that purpose.

What an AEO consultant does that an SEO consultant doesn't

An SEO consultant optimises for search engine rankings, using keyword research, on-page optimisation, backlink strategy, and technical health. This work is still relevant and still matters. But it was designed for a world where discoverability meant appearing in a ranked list, where users make the selection.

In practice, an AEO consultant works across four layers:

Infrastructure. The foundation AI crawlers actually need to access and understand your content: a correctly configured robots.txt that explicitly allows AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot), a clean and current sitemap.xml, and a site built in a way that AI engines can read without JavaScript rendering, because the major AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript.

Schema and entity signals. Structured data—specifically JSON-LD schema—tells AI engines not just what your pages say, but what they mean. A Person entity for the business owner, a ProfessionalService entity for the practice, FAQPage schema on key pages, Service schema on offer pages. These signals are what allow an AI engine to build a confident, consistent picture of who you are and what you do—which is a prerequisite for citation.

Content structure. AI engines extract and cite content differently from how humans read it. They favour answer-first paragraphs—content opening with a direct, self-contained answer in the first 40–60 words—over content written for narrative or persuasion. An AEO consultant restructures content so that each section is extractable as a standalone answer and adds FAQ schema to key Q&A pairs so they can be lifted and attributed cleanly.

Freshness and coverage. AI engines have a recency bias and favour sources that cover a topic comprehensively. The overlap with SEO is real. Clean infrastructure and quality content serve both disciplines. But the priorities, the technical details, and the measurement approach are different enough that they warrant distinct expertise.
